Today I wanted to bring to the spotlight the #1 hormonal problem that affects 1/2 of all Americans: Insulin Resistance! This is the underlying root cause of Prediabetes, Diabetes, and the growing epidemic of Obesity.
Your fasting blood glucose and Hb A1c (marker of your blood sugars over a 3 month period) are just the tip of the iceberg! The giant iceberg beneath the surface is the Insulin levels. That’s why I always check my patients’ 12-hour fasting Insulin levels. An ideal fasting insulin is 6. If your fasting insulin is higher, like > 10, this suggests Insulin Resistance.
Insulin is the hormone made by your pancreas that tells your cells to take up blood sugar. If your cells stop listening to Insulin, your pancreas responds by pouring out even more Insulin! The problem is Insulin makes you hungry and tells your cells to store fat and lock it away! This creates a vicious cycle that makes it very hard to lose weight.
