Hi Friends,
Are you or a loved one suffering from hair loss? Hair loss can be caused by many ROOT causes including the autoimmune condition known as alopecia areata. Thanks to the academy awards, this condition has recently been brought to the spotlight! Alopecia areata is an autoimmune cause of hair loss, where the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing circular patches of baldness. It can range in severity from just patches of hair loss, to complete baldness. The hair loss can occur on the scalp as well as other parts of the body including the eyebrows.
Other causes of hair loss include thyroid imbalances, low iron stores, insufficient protein in the diet, shifts in hormones, inflammation, and stress. Telogen effluvium is the temporary increased shedding of hair, a few months after a stressful event. Interestingly, a viral infection like COVID can be a “stress” on your body. Many of my patients have experienced increased hair loss a few months following the COVID infection. The good news is hair does grow back in cases of stress-induced telogen effluvium.
To learn more, please check out my YouTube video which reviews the most common causes of hair loss. The good news is once we figure out the ROOT cause, there is often a lot we can do through diet, key supplements, and lifestyle to reverse the hair loss and support hair regrowth.
As always, please post your questions and comments. I look forward to hearing from you!
Warm regards,
Rajsree Nambudripad, MD
