BIOFILMS in the Gut Microbiome

Hi Friends,

Deep inside our gut microbiome are over 100 trillion species of bacteria.  While some of these bacteria are “good” and protect us from diseases and promote a healthy gut immune barrier, others are “bad” and cause dysbiosis, or bacterial imbalance.

One of the defense mechanisms of these “bad” bacteria in our microbiome is to create Biofilms.  This is a protective mucous coating produced by the bacteria that allow them to hide in our gut, evading our immune system.

Biofilms trigger inflammation and are associated with increased gut permeability, also known as Leaky Gut.  In fact, colon cancer has been associated with dysbiosis and biofilm formation.  You can learn more here:

Biofilms can also make it more difficult to treat dysbiosis.  We often see this with Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), where the conventionally prescribed antibiotics have a high failure rate.

Here are the key tools we can use to target Biofilms:

1) Digestive Enzyme Pro helps to break down Biofilms, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation in the body.

2) Herbal Antimicrobiomals like Berberine Pro and Oregano Oil are excellent at targeting Biofilms.  They are well tolerated, and can help clean up an unhealthy microbiome caused by dysbiosis or SIBO.

3) NAC stands for N-Acetyl Cysteine.  It helps to break up the mucous that is present in Biofilms.

4)  Probiotics like Probiotic 100 Billion and Probiotic 225 Billion have robust amounts of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, two “good” bacteria to help protect against colonization of these inflammatory bacteria.

Once again, the key to unlocking optimal health lies inside our gut microbiome.  Cleaning up the microbiome by addressing dysbiosis and Biofilms can help improve your immune system, metabolism, energy, hormones, and even mood!
